Some Safe Mode Info

I looked into some of the specific options for Safe Mode in Vista. Here is the official information from Microsoft's web site:
  • Safe Mode: Starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services.
  • Safe mode with networking: Starts Windows in safe mode and includes the network drivers and services needed to access the Internet or other computers on your network.
  • Safe mode with command prompt: Starts Windows in safe mode with a command prompt window instead of the usual Windows interface. This option is intended for IT professionals and administrators.
Information above was taken from http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/f9c50a72-04ec-4088-9fd4-a4f979eef5a71033.mspx

Ready to install!

After a bit of deliberation, I've decided to install Vista using a Hypervisor (virtual machine program). After some research, I've determined that the processor on my computer (a pentium D 930) is one that is capable of utilizing hardware virtualization, so I have high hopes for the usability of vista when installed on this platform.

Attached is a screenshot of the system information utility on the computer I intend to use, as well as the Vista upgrade advisor telling me that the computer is fit to run the OS.

Additionally, since I am on the Vista SP1 beta team, I will be installing from an .iso image of Vista that has been slipstreamed with the Service Pack 1 beta that I obtained from microsoft connect.

Here is a screenshot of the virtual machine setup in parallels workstation for Windows (the host OS is Windows XP SP2).

Looks like I'm ready to go!

This isn't your parent's blog post

In case anyone missed it, the iPhone has finally been unlocked entirely via free software. It took about two hours from the time a commercial software-based patch was released for some very talented programmers to reverse-engineer patch and release a free version.
